Sheet, Wash-Off or Overnight? How to Choose the Right Korean Face Mask

Walk into any Korean skincare aisle and you will find three very different kinds of face masks: sheet masks, wash-off masks and overnight masks. They are not interchangeable. Each one does a different job, and choosing the right type for your skin makes a real difference to the result.

Here is a simple guide to what each mask type does, who it suits, and how to fit masks into your routine without overdoing it.

1. Sheet masks: a quick hydration boost

What they are: a fabric or microfibre sheet soaked in serum, worn for 15 to 20 minutes.

Best for: dehydrated, tired or stressed skin, and anyone who wants an easy, mess-free treat.

How to use: apply on clean skin after toner, remove after the time on the pack, pat in the leftover serum and finish with moisturiser.

Try: the Be Balance 5 Sheet Mask Set, which covers hydration, calming, brightening, breakouts and firming, or pick a single concern such as the Be Balance Pro B5 Hydrating Sheet Mask for dry skin. Our step-by-step sheet mask guide covers the details.

2. Wash-off masks: targeted care in minutes

What they are: creamy, gel or clay-like masks that you apply in a layer, leave on for a few minutes and rinse off.

Best for: specific concerns like dullness, rough texture, congested pores or irritation. They are a good choice for oily and combination skin in humid weather, because nothing heavy stays on the skin afterwards.

How to use: apply to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for the time on the pack, then rinse with lukewarm water and continue with toner, serum and moisturiser.

Use exfoliating masks (rice, black sugar) once or twice a week at most, and not on the same night as acids or retinol.

3. Overnight masks: the last step of your night routine

What they are: masks you leave on while you sleep. Some are gel or cream layers, and others are hydrogel sheets or peel-off films that seal hydration in for hours.

Best for: dry or dehydrated skin, skin that looks dull in the morning, and anyone in an air-conditioned room overnight.

How to use: apply as the final step of your night routine, after moisturiser. In the morning, remove or rinse, then cleanse gently and continue your routine.

Which mask is right for your skin type?

  • Oily or acne-prone: lightweight sheet masks and calming wash-off masks. Keep overnight masks light and occasional. Shop Oily Skin & Large Pores and read why acne is not dirty skin.
  • Dry: hydrating sheet masks and overnight masks, plus a nourishing wash-off mask like honey. Shop Dehydrated Skin.
  • Combination: mix and match. Use a wash-off mask on the T-zone and a hydrating sheet mask on the whole face.
  • Sensitive: soothing masks with ingredients like mugwort, panthenol, oat or azulene. Patch test anything new and avoid exfoliating masks on reactive days. Shop Redness & Sensitivity and Damaged Barrier.
  • Dull or tired-looking: a gentle exfoliating wash-off mask once a week, followed by a hydrating sheet or overnight mask. Shop Dullness & Glow.

How many masks a week?

Two to four mask sessions a week is plenty for most people. A simple plan: one exfoliating wash-off mask, one or two hydrating sheet masks, and one overnight mask. Listen to your skin. If it feels tight, stinging or red, cut back on exfoliating masks and focus on hydration and calming.

The bottom line

Sheet masks give a fast hydration boost, wash-off masks target a specific concern in minutes, and overnight masks work while you sleep. Pick the type that matches what your skin needs, keep exfoliating masks to once or twice a week, and always follow with moisturiser.
