How to Use a Sheet Mask the Right Way (and How Often You Need One)
A sheet mask looks like the easiest step in skincare: open the pack, put it on, relax. But a few small habits decide whether you get soft, plump, comfortable skin or just a wet face for twenty minutes.
This guide walks you through how to use a Korean sheet mask properly, how long to keep it on, how often to use one, and how to pick the right mask for what your skin needs right now.
What does a sheet mask actually do?
A sheet mask is a thin fabric sheet soaked in a concentrated serum (often called an essence). While the sheet sits on your face, it slows evaporation, so the skin stays in contact with that serum for longer than it would if you simply patted it on.
That is why a good sheet mask leaves skin looking hydrated, smoother and more even almost immediately. It is a boost, not a replacement for your daily routine. Think of it as a focused treat for days when your skin looks tired, dry, stressed or dull.
How to use a sheet mask: step by step
1. Start with clean skin
Cleanse with your usual face wash (see our Korean cleansers) and pat your skin almost dry. Applying a mask over sunscreen, makeup or the day's oil and sweat means the serum has to work through a layer of residue first.
2. Use a toner (optional, but helpful)
A light layer of hydrating toner preps the skin so the mask serum spreads more evenly. Skip anything strongly exfoliating right before a mask if your skin is sensitive.
3. Unfold and position the mask
Open the sheet carefully, line up the eye and mouth holes first, then smooth it outwards from the centre of your face. Press out any air bubbles so the sheet stays in contact with your skin everywhere, especially around the nose and jawline.
4. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes
This is the step most people get wrong. Follow the time on the pack, which is usually 15 to 20 minutes. Do not leave it on until it dries out completely. A sheet that has turned dry can start drawing moisture back out of your skin.
5. Remove the sheet and pat in the leftover serum
Peel the mask off from the forehead downwards. There will be serum left on your skin. Do not rinse it off. Gently pat it in with your fingertips until it is mostly absorbed. You can use any extra serum in the pack on your neck.
6. Seal it in with a moisturiser
Finish with your moisturiser to lock the hydration in. In the morning, follow with sunscreen as usual. Not sure where a mask fits? Our guide to the correct order of skincare lays out every step for morning and night.
How often should you use a sheet mask?
For most skin types, two to three times a week is a comfortable rhythm. Very dry or dehydrated skin can enjoy a hydrating mask more often, especially in winter or in air-conditioned rooms. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, two or three times a week with a lightweight, calming mask is usually plenty.
A sheet mask is also a great quick fix before an event, after a long flight, or after a day in the sun.
Morning or night?
Both work. A morning mask gives a fresh, smooth base for makeup. An evening mask is easier to fit in and lets the skin recover overnight. Many people keep a mask in the fridge for a cooling effect on hot, humid days.
Common sheet mask mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the mask on until it is bone dry
- Rinsing off the leftover serum instead of patting it in
- Skipping moisturiser afterwards, so the hydration evaporates
- Reusing a sheet: each sheet mask is single use
- Using a strongly active mask right after exfoliating acids or retinol on sensitive skin
